North Georgia Waterfall and Lakeside Romantic Engagement

In the North Georgia mountains are lakes, waterfalls and mountain views that are some of the most beautiful areas of the state – just the kind of places you’ve grown up wandering if you grew up in the area, and the places you grew to love, if you’ve come from somewhere else. North of Atlanta, the landscape becomes wilder and more remote, but it is amazingly accessible to nature lovers, due to abundant state parks, hiking trails and forestry roads. Being lifelong Georgians, Kalyn and Chandler knew they had to have the backdrop of the iconic North Georgia landscapes for their most important photos to date: their engagement photos.

When Kalyn and Chandler came to me with their ideas about being photographed at a waterfall, I knew we absolutely had to add to that idea and incorporate as much of North Georgia’s natural landscapes as we could. Kalyn and I brainstormed more than once over text and phone calls and decided that traveling to the best locations we could find would be time well spent, once they got their photos back, so we found three separate places to make their romantic engagement photos a reality. We chose three distinct but familiar views in this area – a waterfall, a mountain view, and a lakeside retreat.

Kalyn has impeccable taste, and works in the retail fashion industry, so she was able to find flowing dresses that worked with the natural color palette of our locations, and Chandler wisely dressed in neutrals to let her fashion sense shine. With clothing choices out of the way, we needed to find the right time of day to make these photos a reality, and that is almost always the hour or two before sunset. Timing for the right light is critical for great images, but even then, I brought along my husband as a lighting assistant, so off camera flash could be used as the evening went on. The color of a sunset in portraits is almost impossible to capture without it, and we wanted as much of that beautiful sunset glow as possible! The photos at the waterfall needed just a kiss of light – enough to soften shadows from overhanging trees, but it was indispensable when sunset came on the mountain!

We customized Kalyn and Chandler’s experience to be able to include a lakeside session and met again the following evening. Once again the sky seemed to show off just for them! Most of my photography is light and bright, but there were times as the sun dipped down below the horizon, that I couldn’t help allowing Kalyn and Chandler to become more silhouetted and just let that sunset color shine. I think those are some of my favorite photos from this gallery. I hope you enjoy what you see! Kalyn and Chandler, thank you for being flexible and trusting! I am so excited to highlight a few photos here and cannot wait for your wedding!

Enjoy the gallery, friends!

Locations information: We included places near Dahlonega, Cleveland, and Lake Lanier in our locations list, because of their views and proximity to Jasper, Georgia and my home base of Cumming, Georgia. We weren’t far from the vineyards of North Georgia, which we also considered. There are many more beautiful locations all over the area, and I am excited to explore more!
